Fri 18th Feb

B'fast - L was awake at 6am, so he had a banana before anyone else even got up ;)
And I had 3 cups of tea(with real milk, of course), lol!

Raisin Bagel for me and K, then she followed up with a piece of toast with peanut butter.

Morning tea - apple

Lunch -
K: chicken and cheese s/w
L: cream cheese s/w, some chicken, pumpkin, carrot (if he got any in his mouth? there was a LOT on the floor...) and one quater of K' s/w that he stole of her plate, lol

ME: yummmmmy French cheese and coppa (is that what is it called, the nama-ham type stuff)

Afternoon snack - yoghurt would be good, I think ;)

Dinner: plans to do a 菜の花 and bacon pasta (maybe ペペロンチーノ) and fresh rye/white bread which is cooking up right now. Oh, and some cheese and ham, which has to be used by today - oh, the things we have to do ;P

a full day

This blog has mainly listed out dinners, as I know that I am not (what is the word I am looking for here??) enough to upload what we eat at each meal, each day, however recently I have been trying to make sure that L, and K for that matter, get a good balance of food, so I am gonna try to upload our full daily menu to analyse our eating habits/diet.

(does that paragraph make sense? brain not working, ready for bed...)

Tues Feb 15th
B'fast: spinach and cheese muffins (gee, they really are good!!)

Lunch: Chicken mince, onion, grated carrot, grated pumpkin, tinned tomato* "mac'n'cheese"
Well, am guessing it was like a mac'n'cheese, as I have never had it.
Simply fried up the chicken mince, onion, carrot and pumpkin in olive oil, then added half a tin of tomatoes, then cooked fusilli pasta then mixed in grated cheese.

Dinner: Seafood Thai curry with tumeric rice
Scallops, prawns, abalone, lotus root, carrot and young corn (It makes me laugh that I had all these ingredients in the house, lol!)

The kids had つるつるわかめ, fried potatoes and salmon-rice (L also tried out a corn, but I don't know how much of it he ate ;)

* I didn't intend to put tinned tomato in - still had a bit of tomato puree (in a glass bottle) which I threw into the chicken/vege mix, only to look at the rim of the bottle and see MOULD!! eeewww!! I was this close to throwing the whole thing out, but had nothing else for lunch, so I threw out the bits that had sauce on them (luckily I had tipped the sauce all in one spot, so it was easy to separate) and then used the small amount of un-tainted mix to make the new pasta sauce with tinned tomatoes.

the rooster

Tues I bought a big chunk of pork, with the intentions of cooking up a roast, since I had a bag of new (baby) potatoes. Seems I am not that up with the cuts of meat, and I bought a block of pork belly!! After I got the thumbs down from both J and my folks, I decided NOT to "just try to roast it and see how it goes" and keep that pork belly for another day, so last night we had whatever I could scrimp together at 4:30pm -- which was pasta with bacon, brocolli, onion and tomato based sauce.

Wed morning I told K what we had to do for the day, which involved picking up J's work shirts from the dry cleaners, getting L's haircut (!!!) and buying some meat and pumpkin for the roast...By dinner time last night, K was so excited, and kept on asking where the rooster is ;)

Wed 26th - kinda Australia Day dinner - Roast pork (herbed up with thyme, pepper and cloves and roasted in roughly cut onion and apple juice) with roast veges (potato, pumkin and sweet potato), asparagus spears and honey-butter carrots.

OH YUM!

beating the heat

  • Sun 25th - an early unagi eating fest at home with JAPANESE eel (wow, going all out! talk about breaking the bank) and shijimi miso soup. a 定番 menu to beat the 夏ばて (I hope)

  • Mon 26th - chicken, red capsicum, green beans and mushroom alfredo sauce (out of a jar) pasta with brown bread (homemade). Had to russle up something quick after not getting home until after 5pm after picing up L's passport, and taking K to a trial ballet lesson (that she looooooved, even tho she did all the moves from the sideline right beside me ;)

  • Tues 27th - goya champuru AGAIN!!!!!
    (got another 2 goya from PIL over the weekend. was gonna make goya soup or deep-fried goya, but by the time I got my arse into gear, I really couldnt be bothered!still have a whole goya left to make something with later this week anyways) and 牛蒡金平 which I havent made in ages (wonder if the gobo eaten this wasy is as good for me as making tea out of it - apparently the new wonder diet, just saw it on "The music hour" tv program, of course (!?!?), miso soup using new miso, differnt to what we always buy, and after I made it I found out that it doesnt have the dashi already in it (like the one we usually buy) so it was very tasteless, lol. Only K and I had this as J was late home, so I resurected it with dashi b4 he had dinner.

    riceless is nice sometimes too

    Realised on Fri night that we had run out of rice. As in, i used up the last of it for dinner! And since we forgot to buy any when we went shopping on the weekend, we are gonna tuff it out until Sat when there are 5* points at the supermarket.
    So this week is going to be pretty much riceless (I still have enough frozen for probably one dinners worth). I am ok with a riceless week, of course, but if last night was anything to go by, J will be eating cup ramen for midnight snacks all week (you know, Japanese people are never "full" unless they have eaten a bowl of rice, ROLLS EYES)

    **************************************

    Mon: Oven-roasted herb chicken fillets, with mashed potato, pumpkin, cabbage and asparagus wrapped in bacon. YUMMY asparagus, from Hokkaido.

    Tues: Pasta. eggplant, bacon, mushroom, capsicum in tomato-mushroom sauce. Served with side salads (green salad, three beans mix, tomato/shiso/cucumber). Corn on the cobb (forgot to serve it last night). Possibly with french stick, if I can get to talk to J before he goes past the bread shop on his way home from work.

    fri night = steak night!

    Wed - goya champuru, rice, vege soup, salad.

    Thurs - total write off, thanks to BIG day out. LEft over pasta, and pizza for K and I. J even gad to get his own meal as I thought he would have eaten already after a day trip to osaka for work, but he got home early and un-eaten (? for want of a better word) to nothing!!

    Fri - steak with hot pasta salad (mushrooms, onion, eggplant, yellow capsicum, snow peas and pasta spirals in "prego" tomato and mushroom sauce), dinner rolls from costco. Am looking forward to tonight's dinner☆

    soup, pasta and chicken

  • Cabbage soup, kinda following this recipe, but with about 1/3 of ingredients. Also ended up blending the cabbage/celery mix to make a smooth soup, and it was very very nice! Admitedly, J couldn't work out what it was (he thought it was potato soup) but he did say it was very nice!
  • hot pasta salad. I always try to immitate mum's "famous" hot pasta salad, that is always served at bbqs at home, but I never quite get it right. Still it was nice, for me.
  • herb baked chicken breasts

    J is not a fan of chicken breast, so he wasn't so impressed with dinner. Bugger him, I ENJOYED it immensly, thank you very much! And enough pasta salad and soup and chicken left for lunch!

    barefoot and pregnant but not wanting to stand in the kitchen

    While I was all full of energy (well, at least not on my last legs) when I got home from playgroup, about 30mins after K went down for her nap, I just about passed out from exhaustion! So I went up and joined her, and we slept until nearly 5pm (yikes) which meant that there was nothing prepped for dinner, and I couldn't be bothered fart-arsing around the kitchen for hours on end tonight! A quick search showed that I didin't have a cream stew roux, and couldn't be bothered making one(seeing a pattern?) so I pulled out the jar of alfredo sauce and grilled the left over chicken to make chicken, mushroom, green beans and onion alfredo spaghetti with wa-style salad (lettuce, daikon,shiso, mini tomatoes and 和風 dressing).

    As it turned out, I also pre-made the lasagna for tomorrow's lunch (friends coming over) at the same time, so I guess I wasn't *that* unproductive.

    And I wasn't barefoot inthe kitchen either.

    Also managed to put a loaf of bread on before passing out, so we had fresh rye bread with dinner, yum! Recently I have been enjoying my bread with cream cheese spread. oooooh it tastes so guuuuuuuuuuuuuud!

    ************edit, a few hours later***********
    I just realised that I may have used up my "get out of jail free card" for the week by making the simple meal tonight - now I have to think about something for friday night dinner. With people coming for lunch, I dont think I will be wanting to do a big production for dinner tomorrow night either. damn it.

    Q for kel: you talked somewhere about menu planning - do you plan for the week in advance? just interested....

    baking a pasta bake

    no photo tonight, since obviously the camera is still right beside the computer in the living room, a whole room away from the dining table, lol.

    not very exciting stuff anyway:

    ham sausage pasta bake with a bit of onion, tomato, regular cheese thrown in (a little bit bland, like some commenters said. My fault, was totally racking my brain all afternoon for something simple to make, and use up the ham sausage that is near its due date, but should have put a bit more effort in. The evaporated milk/egg mix was a good idea though I think). Maybe if I had have used ricotta and the other cheeses it would have picked it up a bit, but only had my red chedder and some kraft parmesan to sprikle on the top)
    ☆ daikon, sd tomato and lettuce salad
    ☆ rye bread (made this morning). still lovin' my bread maker!!

    I tried to eat a lot of salad cf pasta, you know, for the weigh in (and to counterbalance the choc muffin I had with my cuppa this afternoon DOH!)

    pasta bake

    I nearly had a fit when J rang to say he WOULD be home for dinner... thought he had to go out with customers but it wasn't necessary at the last minute, but luckily I had enough of the pasta bake to go around - whether he would enjoy it or not, so not my problem as I was cooking for MY tastebuds tonight, lol.

    I realised as I was melting the butter for the white sauce that I only had about half a cup of milk left in the house, but I battled on, upping the amount of chicken stock, and it came out fine, thank you very much.

    I have never really made a pasta bake before, and so simply followed the recipe, but it sorta turned out like a mac'n'cheese. Now, I like my cheese, but have to admit that just this as the main dish was bit too much. Maybe would cut down on cheese next time, or really need to have something on the side to counteract it. Gee, I feel old saying that, lol. That being said, I had another serving of it when J got home, so that there is hardly any leftovers.

    It was different to last night's alfredo, but I was really looking for a different recipe for the chicken and mushrooms, more like a dark casserole, will have to find a good one to try next time I come across button/field mushrooms cheap again.

    frugal Tuesday

    Still trying to save pennies and use up what is in the fridge and cupboard rather than keep buying bits and pieces. So today was a mish-mash of left over vegies:
    * eggplant
    * shiitake mushrooms
    * enoki mushrooms
    * broccoli
    * onion
    * bacon

    served in a tomato sauce with spiral pasta.

    We made bread again today, so K and I took egg s/w (the last of the 2 eggs!!) for lunch on our playdate.

    Friday night surprise

    So I had in my mind that I was going to make a quiche, but realised half way through the day that, surprise, surprise, J had used all but 2 off the eggs in his egg roll last night. So no quiche possible. Worked out well, as I hadn't made the pie crust yet (am having trouble getting motivated to make it again).

    So it was a quick change of plans to:

  • spag bol
  • salad (lettuce, 水菜, button mushies, tomato, cucumber)
  • えのきbacon巻き
  • broccoli

    K is just waiting to dig in!
  •
